I own a lot of mp3s, but there are few times where I just feel compelled to buy a CD. Usually it’s because I love the CD so much that listening to it is not enough. I need to hold it, look at the artwork, read the liner notes. Owning the physical disc is so satisfying sometimes; it makes the music feel that much closer to you.

These are photographs of CDs that I bought in the past year. The photos were taken of each CD while listening to the mp3s of that album with headphones.

Burial - Untrue

This album really snuck up on me. I have to say, at first listen, I didn’t really hear anything, It just sounded like randomized clicks and blips. But I had it on while I was cooking and I began to notice my foot tapping to a beat that i had never noticed in the song before. This really made me curious so I listened to it on headphones while I ate and began to hear just how much of a genius this guy was. The mixing, the sampling, the beats, the layers, everything about this album just blew me to pieces. I ended up listening to it four times in a row and noticed that I heard new things every time. It’s emotional, and atmospheric and hands down my favorite album of 2008.

Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing

The first time I heard this album was when I was about to go driving somewhere. I had just gotten into my car and put the disc in when it started to rain. I could hear the rain drops on my car and the first track slowly escalated when I suddenly noticed the rain and the music were perfectly in sync. Every drop hitting the roof and the trickles of water running down my windshield moved exactly like the music. It was as though the music was conducting the rain. I sat in my car with the engine off and listened to the first track just taking it all in before i drove off and listened to the rest of the album.

Air France - No Way Down

This album is just beautiful and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy and uncontrollably happy. I adore it.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

This album stunned me with its perspective and reality. I created an instant connection to the music and lyrics and was really moved. Its not a story of overcoming your sadness and getting over it. You can’t do that, no one can. This album is about learning from your sadness, understanding that it won’t go away, and how important it is for you to ultimately be happy.
